Upper West Side Apartment Renovation

215 W 75th St, NYC, NY

Having your own place in the dreamy and lively New York City is a true blessing, no matter the size. For those with smaller apartments, renovation can transform the space and achieve the best of its potential. We had the opportunity to demonstrate this with our project on West End Avenue, Manhattan, where a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment made our client feel cramped and stuffy due to its original layout and walls.

Chapter decided on a full gut renovation, effectively resetting the space and implementing better design and planning.

The original wall dividing the living room and kitchen made both areas feel confined. By removing this wall, we created an open concept that enables the feel of continuity and allows natural light to flow freely, making the apartment feel more spacious.

To complement this open layout, we added a kitchen island. This multifunctional piece serves as a table, seating area, and additional storage, reducing the need for extra furniture while improving traffic flow during cooking. We also installed cabinets that reach the ceiling, maximizing storage and creating the illusion of higher ceilings. The range now features a built-in draft vent, looking more modern at the same time providing utility.

Previously, a service entrance took up valuable space; since it was no longer needed, we closed it off and repurposed it for the fridge. This adjustment not only made the area more practical but also added visual interest with new cabinets above.

In the bathroom, we converted the bathtub into a shower, allowing more movement and providing a safer option for our client. We also updated the plumbing, tiles, and fixtures. We installed a pocket door which is an excellent choice for narrow hallways, as it saves space while providing easy access.

Throughout the apartment, we made updates to ensure a brand-new feel. We demolished the existing wooden floors and installed new hardwood flooring, replacing all doors, framing, and trim to complete the transformation.

This project demonstrates that even smaller spaces in bustling New York City can be reimagined and redesigned to become its greatest. With proper designing and attention to detail, we turned a cramped apartment into a bright, functional home, showcasing the potential that every space holds.
